Designed as a show car for the Motorama exhibition, it was launched in 1953. It was done at the initiative of GM chief designer Harley Earl, who was obsessed with aerospace fantasies, and with the support of corporation senior management, who agreed to experiment with something more exotic.
The futuristic dream car became a real vehicle, but the excitement about its appearance soon gave way to disappointment - the Corvette didn't drive as well as it looked. In the first two years, the project proved to be a complete failure, and the company was even going to remove the model from production. But as soon as a more powerful V8 engine was installed under the hood, its sales went uphill.
As a result, the car outlived all its competitors and occupied an exclusive market segment, which has been invariably presented to them for the seventh decade.
